Choosing a Domain

This section will explain how to choose a great domain name, as well as where to search for an available domain and to register the domain. A typical unregistered domain name ending with a “.com” will cost $15 per year. This fee is called the domain registration annual fee.

Here are several useful hints when choosing your domain name:

  1. When choosing for a business, it’s best to stick with the familiar “.com” domain. Generally, clients will search for a domain ending with a dot.com, before looking up the .NET, or .ORG domains. However, if you want to create a domain for clients primarily outside the United States, you have the option to select country specific “Top Level Domains (TLD)” like .AU for Australia, .UK for the United Kingdom, etc.
  2. Find a domain name that is as short as possible
  3. Avoid having hyphens, or replacing letters with digits (the letter O, replaced with the digit zero), as this may lead your clients to another site instead.
  4. Choose an intuitive domain name – domains like Careerbuilder.com tells clients what the site does, instead of Monster.com – which will require more branding, not impossible.
  5. Avoid copyright infringements.
